Working for Working Families PDF Print E-mail

Shelley Berkley was raised in a working class family. Her father, a long-time waiter and Culinary Local 226 member at the former Sands Hotel, earned enough from his job to support a family of four and send two daughters to college. Shelley herself later worked as a union cocktail waitress and keno runner in order to put herself through law school. At every stage of her career, Shelley Berkley has fought for the rights of workers, and believes strongly in the benefits of organized labor.

In Congress, Shelley continues to be the voice of working men and women, fighting for a higher minimum wage, overtime pay, safe working environments, bargaining rights for workers in all professions, and a level playing field in international trade.

Congresswoman Berkley is committed to:

Decent wages for working families

+ Congresswoman Berkley cosponsored the ""Fair Minimum Wage Act,"" which increases the minimum wage to $7.00 in two years.

+ Congresswoman Berkley cosponsored the "Paycheck Fairness Act" which prohibits discrimination in the payment of wages.

Protecting Overtime Pay

+ Representative Berkley voted against the Bush Administration’s new overtime rules which could strip 2.3 million workers, including first responders, preschool teachers and nurses, of their overtime protections.

Safe Working Environments

+ Congresswoman Shelley Berkley voted against anti-worker safety bills that would overturn Occupational Health and Safety Act protections and would substantially weaken worker health and safety laws.

Preserving jobs for southern Nevadans

+ Congresswoman Berkley opposed permanent normal trade relations to China and voted against granting the President’s “fast track” authority for approving trade agreements with other countries. Congress would be forced to give up its oversight role and would be unable to change any labor or environmental provisions.
