(March 1, 2010 -- Las Vegas, NV) Congresswoman Shelley Berkley today filed at the Clark County Government Center for her seventh term representing Nevada’s First Congressional District. “I love Las Vegas and it's an honor for me to be able to fight in Congress for the families and businesses of our community. Today I am asking for the privilege of continuing to serve as your Congresswoman,” said Berkley. “Together we face difficult challenges and I remain focused on creating jobs, strengthening our economy, expanding health care coverage and helping families facing foreclosure. My decades of experience, seniority in the House and knowledge of key Nevada issues give me the right combination to get the job done and to stand-up to those who would try to keep us from getting our fair share in Congress. Expanding solar power use will create good jobs in Nevada and savings for consumers, while also providing increased energy independence,” said Berkley.Berkley’s district includes downtown Las Vegas, the Las Vegas strip, the city of North Las Vegas and other parts of Clark County. As of March 2010, there an estimated 294,000 registered voters in this district. Since winning election in 1998, Shelley has continued her commitment to staying connected to the people of Southern Nevada. Shelley returns to Las Vegas nearly every weekend to meet with voters, attend events, and discuss in person the issues important to us as Nevadans and Americans. “And while I am proud to say we have stopped Yucca Mountain dead in its tracks, there are already efforts underway to target Nevada once again as the nation's nuclear waste dump. No one knows better how to stop these attacks on our state before they happen, and that's why more reason I want to remain your Congresswoman -- so that we never again face the danger of deadly nuclear waste being dumped in our backyard,” Berkley said. A resident of Las Vegas for nearly five decades, Shelley brings a strong commitment to public service and a wealth of experience as an attorney, successful businesswoman, state legislator, University Regent and mother to her role as Congresswoman. She is the proud mother of two sons; Max and Sam. In March 1999, Shelley married Dr. Lawrence Lehrner, a practicing Nephrologist in Las Vegas who has two grown children of his own.
